Religious Candle Safety

December is the peak time of year for home candle fires, as they hold a prominent place in religious observances and are also a popular addition to holiday decor. Simple safety steps can prevent disaster during the holidays; for example, three out of five home candle fires happen when a candle is placed too close to something that can burn! Keeping candles out of the reach of children is common practice, but also be mindful of where your pet can reach (like a cat who can jump on higher ledges or counters). Battery-operated candles are also a great choice for child-friendly decorations.

Take a few moments to learn about candle safety to ensure you are taking proper precautions before lighting a flame in your home.

Candle Safety

  • Candles should be placed in a sturdy candle holder.
  • Lit candles should not be placed in windows where a blind or curtain could catch fire.
  • Never leave a lit candle unattended.
  • If a candle must burn continuously, be sure it is enclosed in a glass container and place it in a sink or on a metal/glass drip pan.

General Fire Safety

  • Store matches and lighters out of the reach of children.
  • Ensure your home has smoke alarms on every level, and test them monthly.
  • Plan and practice a home fire escape drill (see our tips by clicking here).

Real-flame candles are a traditional part of many religious practices and add a beautiful ambiance to the holidays, but their use also adds a degree of risk for fire. Take the time to use them safely in order to keep your holidays merry and bright!
