The Lehigh Acres Fire Control and Rescue District is a special taxing district in east Lee County Florida which provides for fire, rescue, and advanced life support services to a rapidly growing area of approximately 143 square miles with a growing population estimated at approximately 90,000 full time residents.

Job Interest Notice:
The Lehigh Acres Fire Control and Rescue District (District) is accepting applications for persons interested in becoming a Reserve Firefighter for the District. At this time, the Board of Lehigh Acres Fire Control and Rescue District (Board) has authorized the placement and advertisement to determine interest.
This posting on the District’s web site is an attempt to determine the availability of qualified personnel who could fill the role of Reserve Firefighter. This position has not been approved by the Board of Fire Commissioners. Please review the proposed position description to determine if you have the qualifications and then submit an application and applicable certificates to the attention of the Fire Chief.
PROPOSED RESERVE FIREFIGHTER
POSITION DESCRIPTION
REPORTS TO: CAPTAIN OF FIRE SUPRESSION
MAJOR FUNCTION
The person in this class of work is responsible for performing a variety of firefighting tasks and first responder medical care and treatment at the scene of an emergency and is viewed as a community service activity. Regardless of assignment, the employee must maintain combat firefighting readiness as he/she is subject to deployment in that capacity.
Positions in this class require the performance of physically demanding work involving fire suppression and the provision of first responder medical care. Work is frequently performed under conditions where personal injury, death or injury to others can occur; employees must be capable of reacting with speed and composure under these conditions and must exercise some initiative and independent judgment in determining proper actions to take. Under general supervision, reserve firefighters are required to participate in training and/or station drills in order to maintain and increase proficiency in skills necessary to perform assigned duties. Work is performed on a volunteer bases with a minimum of 40 hours per month, including weekends and holidays, and is reviewed through observation and results obtained. Thirty six hours will be ride time and four hours will be mandatory training on the last Saturday of each month. Reservist must live within Lehigh Acres Fire Control and Rescue District’s boundaries and be able to respond, under normal conditions, obeying all traffic laws, to Station 102, 11 Homestead South, within 30 minutes.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
• Searches structures to locate persons trapped or injured, obtain information on source, extent or spread of fire, and to determine structural stability and possible hazards; removes burning objects from structure; uses hand and power tools to ventilate structure; positions and climbs ladders; pulls hose from truck, connects and operates or aids firefighter who is operating hose; extricates victims from damaged motor vehicles; administers first aid; salvages property from damaged structures; restores order and security of damaged structures.
• Proficiency in first responder medical care and treatment; comprehension of anatomy and physiology; applies standards of basic life support and principles of patient handling.
• Maintains high level of continuing education in the above noted fields, as well as innovations in techniques and equipment and their application in pre-hospital emergency care.
• Keeps records and makes reports in accordance with the Fire District Standard Operating Guidelines (SOGs).
• Must adhere to all Fire District policies and rule and regulations.
• Participates in area surveys, maintains and updates records regarding people, buildings, construction in progress, and any other information necessary to effectively provide assistance.
• Participates in station drills or other training to keep up-to-date on necessary skills; performs duties such as watch, apparatus/equipment maintenance, and general housekeeping.
• Maintains current certification in American Heart BLS, and State of Florida EMT or Paramedic Certification.
• Perform other related duties as required (i.e. supplies, inventory, maintenance, etc.).
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Working knowledge of firefighting and rescue methods and techniques; first aid, CPR and first responder techniques, practices, supplies and equipment; firefighting terminology; characteristics of fire; standard firefighting and rescue tools and equipment and their uses; search and rescue techniques and equipment; the street system and physical layout of Lehigh Acres.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally, in writing and by use of hand signals; function efficiently under stressful conditions; lift, carry and maneuver bulky and moderately heavy equipment; perform work requiring considerable physical exertion under hazardous conditions; work cooperatively and interact effectively with all types of people in a variety of situations; and operate a variety of firefighting and rescue equipment.
TRAINING, CERTIFICATION, AND EXPERIENCE
• High school diploma or GED.
• Minimum age of 18 years.
• Character and overall physical condition must be suitable for fire service.
• Certified through Division of State Fire Marshal to perform as a reserve firefighter in the State of Florida (Firefighter I & II).

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
• Must possess Florida Class “E” Driver’s License.
• Must be free of tobacco product usage for one year immediately preceding appointment and throughout time as a Reservist.

Applications can be hand delivered between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, beginning [insert date]. Mailed applications must be received no later than 4:00 p.m. on the final filing date of January 31, 2011
Applications will be placed in numerical order when received by the Fire District. Only the first 150 completed applications will be considered for the interest list.
Selection Process
• Candidates who meet the District’s standards will be invited to submit an application. Candidates who pass the application screening will be invited to an oral interview and skills assessment exam.
• Each candidate will be required to perform a 36 hour Ride-a-Long each month.
• Applicants successfully passing all parts of the testing process will be placed on an eligibility list. A background check will be conducted prior to the final candidate selection.
Medical and Performance Standards
• Prior to appointment, the applicant must pass job related medical and psychological evaluations, pre-employment drug screen testing, and criminal history check. The applicant may be required, after acceptance, to pass periodic medical and physical performance tests.
• Far visual acuity shall be at least 20/30 binocular, corrected with contact lenses or spectacles. Far visual acuity uncorrected shall be at least 20/100 binocular for wearers of hard contacts or spectacles.
