Smoke Detector Maintenance
Our fire district recommends that the residents replace their smoke detector batteries when you change the time on your clocks. This year this is March 9, 2014 to set your clocks ahead and November 2, 2014 to set your clocks back. Most manufacturers recommend replacing batteries twice per year. Accomplishing this during the changing of the clocks is a great way to also remember your smoke detectors.
In the event of a fire in your home while you and your family are asleep, the properly placed and operating smoke detector will alarm and provide you with notice to safely evacuate.
Once you have changed the battery, you should also test your smoke detectors in accordance with the manufacturers recommend procedures. Should you have any questions about how to test your smoke detector or how to replace the battery, consult you manufacturer’s instructions. If these are not available, in most cases you can identify the manufacturer from the information on the device and search for the instructions from an Internet search engine.
Faulty smoke detectors should be replaced as soon as possible. A licensed electrician can also be helpful in replacing defective smoke detectors.
