The original Lehigh Acres Fire Department was started in 1963 with one volunteer fire station. The station had just one engine and was located under a canopy on Homestead Road. In 1965 the first fire station was built on the site of the current station #102.
After having provided volunteer firefighting services for 13 years, the fire department began paying for Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT’s) to operate one ambulance in 1976 which was paid for through community support.
In 1981, the Fire District saw the need to operate an Advanced Life Support (ALS) unit and began the first Paramedic services. As a result, the name was changed to Lehigh Acres Fire Control and Rescue District. Currently the department is one of only two ALS Fire Department transport services in Lee County. The ALS service is responsible for preserving life and property to an estimated population of 87,000 residents in area totaling 143 square miles.
